Dongara Attractions

Dongara & Port Denison are located 360kms north of Perth. First
surveyed in 1852, Dongara was originally established to service the needs of the
surrounding community of pioneer settlers. Not long after the jetty at Port
Denison was constructed to ship the produce and cargo from and to the
area.
Today, both Dongara & Port Denison are well known for their
crayfishing, fishing, wildflowers and a welcome stopover for travellers.
The
twin tourist towns also have many other attractions for visitors of all age groups.
From the young at heart to young in years you wont be disappointed with a stay
in Dongara.
If fishing is your go then you will be well accommodated along the beaches from
Sandy Bay in the south to Nine Mile beach (4WD access)on the north side.
Both
the groin and the town jetty are great locations to try your hand at fishing as
well as the beaches.
Stroll down the pages of history and the path commemorating some of the
shipwrecks and mishaps of the Irwin Coast in the past on the Port Irwin
Shipwreck Walk. Port Irwin was a bustling port, until
the advent of the Railway. Park in the carpark above the playground and stroll
down the path next to the big rock to see all the plaques.
For a truly leisurely walk, the Irwin River Nature Trail is perfect.
Spot all the interesting river wildlife, including Black Swans and Pelicans just
to name a few. Access is off Church Street where the Lookout affords beautiful
views of the river mouth and ocean.
The best time to see the Wildflowers in the Irwin District is usually
from late July through to October, though some species are present all year
round
If you time your trip right to Dongara & Port Denison( July to
October ), you will experience a wildflower display that will fill your photo
album with many wonderful colour photos.!
Jurien Bay Attractions

Jurien Bay, is 22kms north of Cervantes along the Indian Ocean
Road. Jurien Bay has a well protected bay
( the largest in the Central West Coast) and offers quality fishing for both amateurs and professionals. Cray
fishing is a major industry and earns the town millions of dollars yearly with
the season running from November to June.
Jurien Bay Marine Park extends south from Green Head to the Southern
boundary of Nambung National Park.
A small section of this marine park has been allocated for sanctuary zones,
however a full range of marine activities such as fishing, swimming and diving
are allowed in the majority of the marine park area.
Jurien Bay Sea Lions:The Australian sea lion, which is endemic to Australia and specially protected
under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950, breeds on Buller and North Fisherman
islands and uses other islands in the Jurien Bay region as ‘haul-out’ sites.
Jurien is fast earning a
reputation as a growing town that offers safe swimming beaches , a modern marina
for both professional and amateur fishermen. Bush walking and beachcombing are
also popular pastimes.
Windsurfing has become increasingly popular. So much so that the locals have taken advantage of
the location to hone their skills for the annual Slalom Windsurfing Carnival held in Cervantes.
The usual wind is a South Westerly, which is cross wind, that sometimes can be a
little flukey off the main beach. The bay is however flanked to the south by a
sailable beach, that gets the cross wind nicely.
There are reefs offshore that limit the swell that comes in to the area. This
fact means that the area is really a flat water sailing spot. There are several
Islands off shore (before the reef) and it can be quite fun blasting out to them
across the flat bay.
Australia's coral coast is an exciting, happening region
and accommodation Dongara and accommodation Jurien Bay has never been so good !
